Preparing Native Irish Honey Bee Nucs for Inishturk – Galway to Connemara Update
We’re on the road again this week, travelling through Galway, Spiddal and Connemara as part of the ongoing work to establish the Native Irish Honey Bee Sanctuary on Inishturk Island.
This stage involves delivering and preparing empty nuc boxes (nucleus hives), which will be used to house colonies of native Irish honey bees as they are carefully introduced and settled into their new environment.
The nucs will be positioned and readied in advance of their onward journey to Inishturk and Killadoon, County Mayo, where they will play a key role in supporting biodiversity and protecting Ireland’s native dark honey bee (Apis mellifera mellifera).
This preparation phase is essential to ensure the safe transport, acclimatisation, and long-term health of the bees as part of the sanctuary project.
As always, our focus remains on pollinator protection, sustainable beekeeping, and preserving Ireland’s native honey bee population along the Wild Atlantic coast
